Playa Vargas is a coastal bathing beach located in the municipality of Agüimes on Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach extends 1,300 meters in length with a width of 15 meters and features a substrate of boulders. It is exposed to moderate wave conditions with a tidal range of 1–3 metres. The beach is suitable for water sports including surfing and windsurfing.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is based on evaluation of analytical results for faecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci) collected over four years in accordance with Royal Decree 1341/2007. The coastal water body is in good ecological status (biological and physico-chemical), with a total state of good or better according to the Hydrological Plan of Gran Canaria.

Risks

Identified pollution sources include: discharge in the Bay of Formas, Southeast wastewater treatment plant, sewage network, new Southeast outfall, overflow from Risco Verde emergency overflow tank, and septic tank from Eden-Oasis. Two watercourses are identified: Barranco de las Pilas and Barranquillo Oasis. Episodic contamination from rainfall runoff carrying potential contaminants and from urban wastewater (pipe ruptures, network failures, overflows, emergencies, unauthorized discharges) is predicted sporadically with duration less than 72 hours. Cyanobacteria proliferation (Trichodesmium) occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins. No risk from macroalgae.
