Mediterranean coastal waters. The area includes several hydrographic features: the Étang de l'Or (lagoon), the Rhône-Sète Canal, the Étang du Ponant (lagoon), the Vidourle river, and the Saint Louis Channel.

Water quality is classified according to European Directive 2006 standards based on bacteriological analysis. The bathing waters are subject to regular monitoring and risk assessment. Historical beach closures have occurred based on bacteriological quality results.

Risks

Potential pollution sources include wastewater treatment plant discharges, storm overflow systems, urban runoff, non-collective sanitation systems, diffuse pollution from agriculture and recreational facilities, port activities, and camping-car discharge. Macro-algae proliferation potential and phytoplankton proliferation potential have been assessed. Jellyfish invasion episodes have been documented.
