Water

Lake water body. The bathing area is part of the Rautavesi lake in the Kokemäenjoki river system. Water depth ranges from 20 to 40 centimeters with a sandy bottom.

Location

Located at Saarikatu 2a, 38200 Sastamala, Finland. Coordinates: Longitude 22.9065, Latitude 61.3384. The beach has parking, a changing room, toilets, benches, and a children's playground.

Season

Monitoring occurs from 15 June to 31 August. Four samples are collected: one approximately two weeks before the swimming season begins and three samples at approximately monthly intervals during the season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: excellent. Sensory assessment performed at each sampling. E. coli and enterococcus testing conducted. Recent results from 2023 show increasing bacterial counts from sample 1 to sample 4. The surrounding water body (Kokemäenjoki river system) has good surface water quality status. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) species identified include Anabaena and Microcystis, though cyanobacteria have not been present on sampling dates. Toxic cyanobacteria screening has not been performed.

Risks

Cyanobacteria have occurred sporadically in some years, potentially drifting from the Kokemäenjoki river during algal blooms. Warning signs are deployed during cyanobacteria occurrences. A wastewater pumping station and pressure sewer leading to the treatment plant are located in the immediate vicinity, with potential overflow to the water body in exceptional circumstances. A stormwater pumping station discharge is approximately 100 meters from the beach. Waterfowl may defecate on the beach area. Weather phenomena may temporarily mix water and reduce water quality. Short-term contamination events are possible.
