Portonovo is a pebble beach in Ancona, Marche region, protected by natural submerged limestone reefs. The beach extends 1600 metres in length and 35 metres in width, with an average slope of 5% on the emerged beach and 8% on the submerged beach. The distance between mean low and high water is 5 metres, with astronomical tidal range of 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area consists of urban and tourist settlements mixed with Mediterranean scrubland.

Coastal marine water body designated Ancona_Numana. Beach length 1600 metres, width 35 metres. Mean slope 5% on emerged beach and 8% on submerged beach. Distance between mean low and high water mark 5 metres. Astronomical tidal range 30–50 centimetres.

Location

Ancona, Marche region, Italy. The beach is located in the Portonovo area of Ancona municipality.

Facilities

Toilet facilities including disabled access. Ambulance service available at Portonovo square during July and August weekends only. Pedestrian walkway connecting restaurants and beach establishments. Slope connecting beach to sea with disabled access. Water sports, small boat rental for oars and pedals, windsurfing, small-scale fishing, and mussel farming available in designated areas.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Category C (poor). Wastewater treatment serves Camerano and South Ancona fractions through a biological treatment plant with activated sludge system, capacity 7032 cubic metres per day or 32,000 equivalent inhabitants. Monthly monitoring by ARPAM in 2010 showed Escherichia coli levels: January 70 CFU/100ml, February 10 CFU/100ml, June 4800 CFU/100ml, July 100 CFU/100ml, August 43 CFU/10ml, September 13 CFU/10ml, October 40 CFU/100ml, November 60 CFU/100ml. March, April, and May were below determination limits. December was below determination limits.

Risks

Toxic algae blooms recorded in September 2008 and September 2009 (Ostreopsis ovata), with deaths of benthic organisms including limpets, sea urchins, and mussels reported. During heavy rainfall, stormwater overflows from mixed sewage collection system discharge into Aspio creek and tributaries.
