Portonovo Scoglio Vela is a rocky beach in Ancona, Marche region, protected by natural submerged limestone cliffs. The beach is steep with a distance of 1 metre between medium-low and high water levels, and experiences astronomical tides of 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area is characterized by Mediterranean shrubland.

Location

Ancona, Marche region, Italy. The beach extends 1500 metres in length and 20 metres in width.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E (poor). Monthly monitoring by ARPAM in 2010 showed Escherichia coli levels ranging from below detection limit to 4800 CFU/100 ml in June. Wastewater treatment is provided by a biological activated sludge plant in Camerano with a capacity of 7032 cubic metres per day. During heavy rainfall, overflow discharge occurs through multiple points into the Aspio stream and its tributaries.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation observed. Toxic algae bloom (Ostreopsis ovata) occurred in September 2008, causing death of sessile benthic organisms (limpets, sea urchins, mussels). No human health effects reported from this event. In 2007, 2009, and 2010, no algal blooms were recorded.
