Riccione - Fogliano Marina is a sandy beach bathing area in the municipality of Riccione, Emilia-Romagna, extending approximately 1,500 metres along the Adriatic coast. The beach is characterized by high tourist use with numerous hotels and beach establishments. Lifeguard services operate throughout the bathing season. The beach width varies between 80 and 110 metres. Water quality classification for the period 2019–2022 was Excellent, based on microbiological monitoring of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci.

Coastal marine waters of the alluvial plain with high stability. Area extension: 1.475 km². Drainage basin area of the stormwater discharge: 29.64 hectares.

Location

Riccione, province of Rimini, Emilia-Romagna region, in the central-southern coastal area of the Adriatic. The area is situated at Piazzale Azzarita in Riccione.

Facilities

35 beach establishments with first aid services, toilet facilities accessible to persons with disabilities, hot showers, barrier-free access, sports structures, and food service points. Lifeguard services during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent (2019–2022). Escherichia coli (90th percentile): 69 CFU/100 ml; (95th percentile): 100 CFU/100 ml. Intestinal enterococci (90th percentile): 40 CFU/100 ml; (95th percentile): 55 CFU/100 ml. One anomalous situation occurred on 26 July 2022 when Escherichia coli exceeded legal limits; this was classified as an anomalous situation by the European Commission. No cyanobacterial blooms have been reported. No phytoplankton or macroalgae blooms recorded during 2019–2022.

Risks

Stormwater discharge (drainage system 10001/17) located at Piazzale Azzarita discharges directly into the Adriatic Sea with a first-rain tank upstream. During intense rainfall events, runoff from urban and agricultural areas in the drainage basin may discharge to sea with potential microbiological impacts on bathing water quality. The area is subject to sand extraction for beach nourishment.
