Riccione - Rio Costa is a sandy beach bathing area located in the municipality of Riccione in the Emilia-Romagna region. The beach extends for approximately 900 metres and is protected by a submerged barrier filled with sand positioned 150-200 metres from the shoreline. The area is highly frequented by tourists with numerous hotels and beach facilities, and maintains a constant lifeguard service during the bathing season. The beach is subject to significant erosion but is kept in balance through periodic sand replenishment interventions.

Water

Coastal marine waters. The bathing area extends 0.973 km with a beach width of 80 metres. A rainwater confluence called Rio Costa discharges into the sea during intense or prolonged precipitation events.

Location

Riccione, Rimini Province, Emilia-Romagna region. The bathing area is situated in the central-southern coastal zone of the Adriatic Sea.

Facilities

20 beach establishments with first aid services, sanitary facilities accessible to people with disabilities, hot showers, wheelchair access, sports facilities, and food and beverage outlets. Constant lifeguard service during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (reference years 2015–2018). Escherichia Coli (90th percentile): 27 CFU/100 ml; Escherichia Coli (95th percentile): 33 CFU/100 ml. Intestinal Enterococci (90th percentile): 32 CFU/100 ml; Intestinal Enterococci (95th percentile): 42 CFU/100 ml. No anomalous situations occurred during the bathing seasons 2015–2018.

Risks

Rio Costa rainwater discharge may cause eutrophication phenomena. In August 2017, a bloom of the raphidophyte Fibrocapsa japonica was reported. Macroalgae accumulation may modify recreational use of the bathing zone during biomass accumulation phases. No sustained eutrophic phenomena caused by cyanobacteria have ever been recorded.
