Rimini - Ausa is a sandy beach bathing area in Rimini, Emilia-Romagna, extending approximately 1.6 km without cliff protection. The area is characterized by high tourist use with 40 beach establishments providing lifeguard services. The beach width varies between 180–200 metres. It was affected by construction works related to the Ausa overflow system as part of Rimini's Optimised Bathing Protection Plan, which included installation of retention basins and emergency discharge systems to manage stormwater overflow.

Coastal marine water body, flat alluvial type with high stability. The bathing area extends for 1.6 km. The drainage basin serving this area covers approximately 677 hectares.

Location

Located in the municipality of Rimini, Emilia-Romagna province, in the central-southern coastal area. The bathing area is served by 40 beach establishments with rescue services and amenities.

40 beach establishments with first aid services, toilets accessible for disabled users, hot showers, no architectural barriers, sports facilities, food and beverage points. Lifeguard service available during bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (reference years 2019–2022). Escherichia coli (90th percentile): 61 CFU/100 ml; Escherichia coli (95th percentile): 87 CFU/100 ml. Intestinal enterococci (90th percentile): 19 CFU/100 ml; Intestinal enterococci (95th percentile): 22 CFU/100 ml. An anomalous situation occurred on 26 July 2022 with exceedance of Escherichia coli limits; this was classified as an anomalous situation by the European Commission and managed through temporary prohibition measures.

Risks

Emergency overflow (sfioratore) discharge from the mixed sewage network during intense or prolonged rainfall events. Three marine discharge outlets and one emergency tidal discharge with fans. Potential eutrophication phenomena from the nearby old Ausa watercourse outlet. Raphidophyte Fibrocapsa japonica blooms occurred in July 2021.
