Water

The Duero River. Environmental flow rate: 6.6 m³/s. Mean flow rate: 24.6 m³/s. Four-year return period flow rate: 994 m³/s. The bed composition is silt and sand. The bathing beach has a sandy substrate. The area is classified as a heavily modified water body due to morphological alteration.

Location

Quintanilla de Arriba, Valladolid province, Spain. Access from Valladolid via Avenida Valladolid or from Peñafiel via Avenida Estación on the N-122 road. Once in Quintanilla de Arriba, take Calle del Río to access the bathing zone. Parking is available.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Insuficiente (Insufficient) in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, very high microbiological contamination was recorded on 4 July and 4 September, with the September sample particularly elevated, leading to a recommendation against bathing. The primary identified pollution source is the wastewater discharge from Pesquera de Duero, located approximately 5.5 km upstream, with a treatment capacity serving 1,200 population equivalents and inadequate treatment. Risk of faecal contamination episodes is latent when river flow rates fall below 5.5 m³/s.

Risks

High microbiological contamination from wastewater discharge of Pesquera de Duero upstream. Sewage treatment systems from Pesquera de Duero, Langayo, and Peñafiel represent potential contamination sources. Runoff from agricultural areas presents diffuse pollution risk. Accidental or illegal discharges, dead animals, organic waste, and sediment remobilization are identified short-duration contamination risks. Risk episodes are more likely when river discharge is abnormally reduced.
