Playa de Furelos is a fluvial bathing area located in Melide, Galicia, Spain, on the Río Furelos river. The beach features a grass and sand substrate with wooden walkways and concrete areas. The site is situated in a river section with single channel and low sinuosity, flowing over alternating detritic and rocky substrates composed mainly of amphibolites and green schists.

Water

River (Río Furelos). Part of the Galicia Costa hydrographic district. Catchment area of 107.13 km² with mean catchment slope of 10.12%. River bed composed of fine and medium sands, gravels, and pebbles. Environmental flow ranges from 0.01 m³/s in July-August to 0.62 m³/s in December. Four-year return period flow is 31 m³/s. Mean annual precipitation is 1830 mm/year.

Location

Melide, A Coruña province, Galicia. Access from Lugo via the N-540 towards Guntín on the N-547 (Santiago-Guntín road), then turn right before Melide following signs for 'Plaia Fluvial'. Parking is available at the site.

Facilities

Parking, bar/snack bar, picnic areas, waste bins, toilets, showers, swimming pool, recreational zone, informational signage. No lifeguard service or boat launch.

Water Quality

Monitoring conducted under Real Decreto 1341/2007. Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations measured in 2008 and 2009. Possible contamination episodes affecting bather health identified at flows below 0.12 m³/s based on intestinal enterococci concentrations. Water quality history shows variation in compliance with mandatory values during 2003-2009 period.

Risks

Faecal contamination from livestock in the catchment area (6,671 cattle, 7,051 pigs, 163 sheep, 226 horses, 602 poultry, 20 rabbit breeding does). Self-contamination from bathers. Health risk identified for intestinal enterococci concentrations exceeding 1000 UFC/100 ml occurring at river flows below 0.12 m³/s.
