Water

The Miño River, a continental water body in the Miño-Sil hydrographic district. River bed composition is gravel and pebbles. Environmental flow rate is 28.57 cubic metres per second. The four-year return period flow is 3,430 cubic metres per second. Aquatic vegetation includes Ranunculus aquatilis, rushes, and rockrose species.

Location

Located in Caldelas, Tui, Pontevedra province, Galicia, Spain. Accessible from Caldelas de Tui or via the PO-404 road connecting Tui to Salvaterra de Miño. The PO-404 turns toward the Caldelas spa resort, with an asphalt road leading to the resort; from there an initial 120-metre asphalt path borders a landscaped garden area before transitioning to a dirt track providing access to the bathing zone. Parking is not available at the site.

Facilities

Two seasonal bars/chiringuitos, 12 merenderos (picnic areas) with seating, 8 grills, 5 streetlights, 3 exercise machines, children's play area, 2 fountains (one ornamental and one drinking water), informational signage. A nearby spa resort has a septic tank located approximately 38 metres from the river. No lifeguard post, toilets, showers, disabled access, or swimming flags are mentioned.

Water Quality

Microbiological monitoring conducted during the 2011 bathing season (June to September) measured intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli concentrations. Enterococci ranged from 45 to 500 CFU/100 ml; E. coli ranged from 40 to 2,500 CFU/100 ml. Multiple point sources of contamination were identified in the upstream catchment, including significant sewerage discharges from municipalities and notable agricultural diffuse pollution sources.

Risks

Short-duration contamination risks include significant point source discharges from treatment system failures, agricultural runoff during heavy rainfall, high bather numbers on weekends, accidental or illegal discharges, dead animals in the bathing zone, sediment mobilisation during heavy rainfall, organic waste from heavy rainfall or bathers, and manure storage overflow when river flow is abnormally reduced.
