Río Rois is a river bathing area located in Rois municipality, Coruña province, Galicia, Spain. The bathing zone is situated on a single-channel, gently meandering section of the Rois river with small lateral bars. The riverbed substrate consists of siliceous detrital materials, with gravels on the bottom and sandy soil on the beach area. The surrounding vegetation includes native trees with shrubs and herbaceous plants on the right margin, and replanted trees with herbaceous vegetation on the left margin.

Water

River (río). The Rois river is a coastal Atlantic river in the Ulla-Ría Arousa water exploitation system. The catchment area is 46 km² with a perimeter of 47 km. Maximum elevation is 597 m and minimum is 13 m. The basin has an average slope of 16.92%. Monthly flows vary from 0.0105 m³/s in July to 1.4886 m³/s in January. The four-year return period flood flow is 92 m³/s.

Location

The bathing area is accessed from Padrón by taking the road towards Seira and continuing to the bridge crossing the river. Parking is available at the site. The bathing zone is located at UTM coordinates X 527345, Y 4735546 (DATUM ED 50), zone 29, at an altitude of 13 metres.

Water Quality

Historical fecal coliform data (1993–2007) showed no values exceeding the old imperative standard of 2000 UFC/100ml, though an increasing trend was observed. Water quality classifications from 2003–2009 showed compliance with imperative values in most seasons. E. coli and intestinal enterococci monitoring in 2008 and 2009 were conducted according to Royal Decree 1341/2007. Possible contamination episodes affecting bather health could occur at river flows below 0.0105 m³/s with intestinal enterococci concentrations exceeding 1000 UFC/100ml.

Risks

Diffuse contamination from livestock (4160 cattle, 165 sheep, 173 equine animals in Rois municipality) and agricultural activities (manure from crops and pastures transported by runoff). Possible risks from accidental or illegal discharges, dead animals, organic waste, and sediment/sludge remobilization. Unusually reduced river flow during low-discharge periods (July, August, early September) increases contamination concentration risk.
