Río Turia at Sot de Chera, also known as Charco del Gruñidor, is a continental bathing zone in the municipality of Sot de Chera in Valencia, Spain. The bathing area is located within an urban setting and features a natural pool created by gates that are closed to create a pond effect. The pool is emptied and cleaned every fifteen days during the summer season. The riverbed consists of bedrock with pools in the northern zone and concrete in the central and southern zones.

Water

River (Río Turia) in a Mediterranean low mountain mineralized river type system. The drainage basin covers 234.28 km² with a perimeter of 90.28 km and elevation ranging from 240 to 1,100 metres. Minimum proposed flow rate in ordinary conditions is 0.01 m³/s. The riverbed substrate is composed of limestone, dolomite, and marl rock formations.

Location

From Valencia, take the CV-35 towards Ademuz and turn off towards Chulilla/Sot de Chera/Chera. Upon reaching Sot de Chera town, enter via the main street and follow signs for 'Charco el Gruñidor', turning right at the final indicator to reach the bathing zone. Parking is available at the site.

Facilities

Parking, informational signage, bar/café, picnic areas, waste bins, toilets, showers, recreational zone, boat ramp, sources of drinking water, and containers for waste. Daily waste collection is performed. No lifeguard posts or domestic animal access.

Water Quality

Water quality classification by season is available according to Royal Decree 1341/2007 criteria. Identified pollution sources include self-contamination from bathers, urban wastewater discharges 8.9 km upstream with 939 equivalent inhabitants, and diffuse sources such as agricultural runoff from livestock and cultivated areas. Short-duration contamination risks are documented including incidents from heavy rainfall, accidental or illegal discharges, and sediment mobilization.

Short-duration contamination risks include agricultural runoff from livestock areas and cultivated fields during heavy rainfall, self-contamination from high numbers of bathers on weekends, accidental or illegal discharges, dead animals, sediment mobilization from heavy rainfall or high bather numbers, organic waste from strong rainfall or elevated bather numbers, and wastewater system failures when river flow is abnormally reduced.
