Rivazzurra-Rodella is a sandy beach located in the municipality of Rimini in the Emilia-Romagna region. The beach extends for approximately 1 km and is not protected by cliffs. It is a high-tourism area with numerous hotels and beach establishments, featuring constant lifeguard services during the bathing season. The beach width ranges from 150 to 170 metres. The emerged beach and shoreline are in equilibrium, although the seabed is experiencing erosion.

Water

Coastal marine water in the central-southern coastal area of Rimini. The area is influenced by the Rodella Ditch (Fossa Rodella) which flows into the Adriatic Sea. The catchment basin underlying the bathing profile area covers approximately 623 hectares.

Location

Located in Rimini, Emilia-Romagna, in the Rivazzurra locality. Coordinates: centre at X=12.6204, Y=44.0370; northern point at X=12.6156°, Y=44.0397°; southern point at X=12.6234°, Y=44.0329°. The beach area extends 0.989 km.

Facilities

Twenty-six beach establishments with first-aid services, toilets for disabled users, hot showers, no architectural barriers, sports facilities, and food and beverage points. Constant lifeguard service during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (reference years 2015–2018). Escherichia coli (90th percentile): 34 CFU/100 ml; Escherichia coli (95th percentile): 45 CFU/100 ml. Intestinal enterococci (90th percentile): 19 CFU/100 ml; Intestinal enterococci (95th percentile): 22 CFU/100 ml. The area is influenced by four discharge points: emergency overflow number 48 (mixed sewerage), overflow number 3A (mixed sewerage), emergency overflow 123_V (mixed sewerage), and discharge number 218 (rainwater and emergency overflow black network). Urban wastewater is treated by the Rimini Santa Giustina treatment plant, which discharges treated effluent into the Marecchia River.

Risks

Emergency overflow number 48 discharges immediately upstream of the Rodella Ditch outflow into the Adriatic Sea during heavy or prolonged rainfall. Additional overflow points 3A, 123_V, and 218 discharge excess water during intense meteorological events. A first-rain storage tank of 5,600 cubic metres temporarily stores excess water, with overflow capacity of 250 litres per second. The proximity of the Rodella Ditch may cause eutrophication phenomena. No cyanobacterial blooms have been reported in the past four years. No phytoplankton blooms (Raphidophyceae Fibrocapsa japonica) or macroalgal events were recorded during 2015–2018.
