Rødding Sø

Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Rødding Sø is a bathing beach located at the western end of a freshwater lake recreated in 2004 near the town of Rødding in Viborg Municipality, Denmark. The beach is characterized as an urban beach with easy access, featuring a sandy bottom and natural boundaries formed by reeds and reed canary grass on both sides. The beach has a width of 75–100 metres and a well-maintained recreational area with grass, picnic tables, benches, and a barbecue/bonfire area.

Water

Rødding Sø is a freshwater lake covering approximately 25 hectares with a maximum depth of 2.5 metres and an average depth of 1.49 metres. The lake bottom consists of sand mixed with more muddy sediment. Water temperature during summer ranges from 16–21 degrees Celsius.

Location

The beach is located immediately west of Rødding town, at the western end of Rødding Sø lake. A parking area is available near the beach.

Parking area, toilet, picnic tables and benches, waste bins, swing set, barbecue/bonfire area.

Season

Routine monitoring of bathing water occurs during the bathing season.

Water Quality

The bathing water at Rødding Sø was classified as Excellent (based on data from 2020–2023) according to 2023 classification. Water quality is assessed through routine monitoring of indicator bacteria E. coli and enterococci during the bathing season. The lake's ecological status is classified as poor and does not meet nutrient reduction targets, with phosphorus concentrations remaining elevated.

Risks

Risk of algal blooms and cyanobacterial (blue-green algae) blooms, particularly during warm, calm, sunny weather typically from April to October, with blue-green algae more likely in late summer. Overflow events from combined sewage systems during heavy rainfall may cause temporary faecal contamination. Cyanotoxins from dense blue-green algae blooms can cause illness in swimmers and can be fatal to animals such as dogs.
