Roja is a bathing water located on the coast of Riga Bay in Latvia. The bathing water is subject to monitoring and quality assessment in accordance with EU Directive 2006/7/EK. Water quality is evaluated based on microbiological criteria, including E. coli and intestinal enterococci levels, as well as consideration of cyanobacteria blooms. The water profile describes physical, geographical, hydrological, and coastal characteristics that affect or could affect bathing water quality.

Water Quality

Water quality classification follows a four-class scale: excellent, good, sufficient, and poor. For marine coastal waters, excellent quality requires intestinal enterococci ≤100 CFU/100 ml and E. coli ≤250 CFU/100 ml (95th percentile); good quality requires intestinal enterococci ≤200 CFU/100 ml and E. coli ≤500 CFU/100 ml (95th percentile); sufficient quality requires intestinal enterococci ≤185 CFU/100 ml and E. coli ≤500 CFU/100 ml (90th percentile). Swimming is not recommended when E. coli exceeds 1000 but does not exceed 3000 organisms per 100 ml and/or intestinal enterococci exceed 300 but do not exceed 500 per 100 ml. Swimming is prohibited when E. coli exceeds 3000 organisms per 100 ml and/or intestinal enterococci exceed 500 per 100 ml, or when excessive cyanobacteria blooms are observed.

Risks

Point pollution sources, Roja port, bird colonies, and potential for macroalgae and phytoplankton algae including cyanobacteria blooms are identified as factors that may affect bathing water quality.
