Carry-le-Rouet is a residential and seaside municipality of 5,891 inhabitants located in Bouches-du-Rhône, France, with developed urbanization along the coast. The commune has five designated bathing water zones: La Tuilière, Fernandel, Cap Rousset, Le Rouet, and Plage des Eaux Salées. Water quality is monitored under European Directive 2006/7/CE, with microbiological parameters (intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli) assessed through seasonal sampling. Mediterranean Sea (saltwater). Bathing zones characterized by various bottom types. Multiple discharge points and freshwater resurgences identified at La Tuilière, Cap Rousset, Le Rouet, and Plage des Eaux Salées. Seagrass (posidonia) in very good state of conservation.

Water Quality

All five bathing zones classified as excellent quality water (2018 and 2015–2018 evaluation periods). Microbiological monitoring shows E. coli and intestinal enterococci levels well below threshold values. La Tuilière: E. coli percentile 95 = 99 UFC/100 ml, E. I. = 29 UFC/100 ml (2018). Cap Rousset: E. coli = 98, E. I. = 88 (2018). Le Rouet: E. coli = 91, E. I. = 66 (2018). Medium and poor sampling results occurred primarily during rainfall events and wastewater treatment station overflows. Water quality degradation is associated with urban runoff and occasional treatment plant discharges.

Risks

Urban runoff and treatment station overflows degrade water quality during heavy rainfall. Southeasterly winds aggravate water pollution. Wastewater treatment plant (STEP) discharges occur at Vallon de l'Aigle (1.5 km from bathing areas) and via undersea outfall at Carry-Sausset station (over 4 km away). Eleven lift stations in collective sewerage system pose overflow risk. Ports, maritime traffic, nautical activities, animal waste, swimmer excretions, sediment resuspension, and macro-debris identified as potential pollution sources.
