Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Obernzenner See is a 14-hectare reservoir located approximately 50 km west of Nuremberg. It was constructed between 1978 and 1981 as a flood retention basin with a water storage capacity of 710,000 cubic metres. The lake shoreline extends over 20 hectares and is divided into three zones: a bathing area, a zone for surfing and boating, and a protected biotope. The lake was temporarily closed for maintenance and is expected to reopen for bathing and water sports in 2026.

Water

Location

Approximately 50 km west of Nuremberg. Adequate parking is available. A beach house adjacent to the bathing water provides toilet facilities. A camping site is located immediately adjacent to the lake.

Facilities

Lifeguards (inferred from official bathing water designation), toilets at the beach house, surfing opportunities, inflatable boat facilities, sailing, fishing, table tennis, parking.

Season

Four-year monitoring period: 2021 to 2024. Annual quality assessment occurs at the end of each bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is based on a four-year evaluation period using a 95-percentile statistical assessment method, with ratings of excellent, good, sufficient, or poor. Currently no samples are available for the ongoing year. Quality assessment is conducted annually at the end of the bathing season.

Risks

High numbers of water birds and contact with their droppings pose health risks including diarrhoea, severe fever-accompanied illnesses, and skin rashes (cercarial dermatitis). Boundary value exceedances trigger follow-up monitoring by the health authority.
