Ruguel is a sandy beach in the municipality of Roscoff that is officially open for bathing. The beach is closed in configuration, which means pollutants tend to persist longer in the bathing zone. Water quality monitoring between 2005 and 2010 showed good to average quality under the 76/160/EEC Directive classification, with results that would have achieved good quality in 2008-2009 and sufficient quality in 2010 under the 2006/7/CE Directive.

Sandy beach with closed configuration. The bathing zone is characterized by very low slopes in the immediate perimeter, with agricultural soils predominating at 75% of the territory, which increases soil permeability and runoff speed to the bathing zone.

Ruguel beach is located in the municipality of Roscoff.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: good to average (2005-2010 under 76/160/EEC); would have been good in 2008-2009 and sufficient in 2010 under 2006/7/CE classification. Three exceedances of AFSSET thresholds for enterococci were recorded between 2005 and 2010. Identified pollution sources include: stormwater outfalls discharging near the bathing zone, raw effluent discharge from sewage lifting stations during malfunction, non-compliant individual sewage systems in the immediate perimeter, animal park facilities, and birds. Non-bacterial pollution includes nutrient inputs with risk of green algae proliferation.

Bacterial contamination risk from stormwater outfalls, sewage system discharges, non-compliant individual sewage installations, and wildlife. Non-bacterial pollution risk from nutrient inputs leading to potential green algae proliferation. Pollution may persist longer due to the closed beach configuration.
