Ředkovec is a shallow, highly eutrophic pond located at an elevation of 425 metres. The pond has a surface area of 4.7 hectares and a depth of 3 metres at the dam. It is a flow-through pond with a theoretical water retention time of approximately 10 days, extending to 2–3 times longer in summer. The bathing area has a grassy bank with a beach length of 100 metres and receives fewer than 100 visitors annually.

Pond (rybník). Surface area: 4.7 hectares. Depth at dam: 3 metres. Water flow rate (Q): 0.053 cubic metres per second. Specific runoff (q): 6.36 litres per second per square kilometre. Theoretical water retention time: approximately 10 days, extending to 2–3 times longer in summer. Catchment area: 8.34 square kilometres. The pond has no bypass channel.

Location

The pond is located in the Vysočina region of the Czech Republic. The catchment area includes the small communities of Brouomova Lhota and Volichov.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Acceptable (monitoring period 2021–2024). Overall hygiene service rating: Grade 5 (poorest) in June 2022 and throughout July and August 2024; more favourable in other years. The pond exhibits strongly eutrophic characteristics with high phosphorus concentrations (historical data: 0.05–0.42 mg/litre total phosphorus), enabling intensive phytoplankton and cyanobacterial growth. Cyanobacteria cell counts varied considerably: 0–2,100 cells per millilitre in 2020 and 2022; approximately 200,000 cells per millilitre in late swimming season 2021 and 2023; up to 931,000 cells per millilitre in 2024. Average phytoplankton biomass (June–August) ranged from 47 µg/litre chlorophyll-a in 2020 to 195 µg/litre in 2024, with maximum values reaching 430 µg/litre chlorophyll-a. Water pH ranges from 6.9 to 9.7. Water transparency regularly drops below the 1 metre limit, reaching as low as 0.1 metre; average transparency in the poorest 2024 season was 0.22 metres. High year-to-year variability with a stable long-term trend.

Risks

During summer months, increased water flows cause rapid flushing of the flow-through pond, resulting in high probability of microbial contamination introduction. High risk of microbial contamination from diffuse sources in small communities within the catchment area during high summer flows. Extreme risk of phosphorus input from diffuse sources, primarily small settlements. Fish stocking presents high risk for phosphorus input. Toxicologically risky cyanobacterial species are frequently present in high concentrations.
