France Lake 1 - Excellent

The Municipal Beach of Lake Beunaz is a bathing site located at an altitude of 952 metres in the commune of Saint Paul en Chablais in the Haute-Savoie department. The lake, also known as Lac Bleu, covers an area of approximately 16,400 square metres and has a maximum depth of 10 metres. The bathing area is situated in a relatively unspoiled landscape characterized by woods, marshes, and surrounding mountain scenery, though nearby residential hamlets exist to the north and east.

Water

Lake (étang). Surface area: 16,400 square metres. Maximum depth: 10 metres. Total volume: 53,800 cubic metres. Watershed area: approximately 40,000 square metres. Water renewal rate: minimum of 21 days on average. The lake is fed principally by surface runoff and epidermal flows from its watershed, and secondarily by the Ruisseau de la Colonie stream originating from a wetland zone near the Gottetaz hamlet.

Location

Located in Saint Paul en Chablais commune, Haute-Savoie department, in the extreme north of the region on the slopes overlooking Lake Geneva in the Chablais massif. The lake is positioned southeast of the village at an altitude of 952 metres, between the RD52 road connecting Saint Paul en Chablais to Bernex and a municipal road passing through the hamlets of Chez Gaillet and La Gottetaz. Access is via the southern approach to the bathing zone.

Water Quality

Water quality analyses were conducted by DASS/ARS from 2003 to 2012. The study notes that average summer water temperatures range between 16.4 and 29 degrees Celsius, which relatively limit bacterial development. Historical water quality data was reviewed as part of the bathing profile assessment.

Risks

Potential risks include cyanobacteria exposure, which was assessed as part of the study. Spring snowmelt and regular summer precipitation favour runoff, which carries suspended matter and bacteria. Flooding risk from the Black Lake stream was studied by ONF service RTM74 in 2008.
