San Cataldo-Vicino al Faro is located in the municipality of Lecce, province of Lecce, in the Puglia region. The area belongs to the Cerano-Le Cesine water body.

Risks

Dinoflagellate microalgae Ostreopsis ovata blooms occur seasonally from July to September. These blooms have caused mortality and stress in marine organisms including starfish, sea urchins, crabs, and cephalopod mollusks. Bathers have reported transitory discomfort including rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, fever, dermatitis, and conjunctivitis coinciding with high concentrations of Ostreopsis ovata in the water and on the seabed, particularly after storms, when wave action can form marine aerosol that disperses the toxin into the air.
