The Schwackenreuter Seen originated from a larger gravel extraction area that extended across the districts of Sauldorf, Mühlingen, and Hohenfels. Ten lakes belong to this area of approximately 100 hectares. The nature conservation regulation governs the various uses. There are designated hiking trails, and fishing and hunting can continue as before. Lake 6 (Mühlingen district) has been designated as a bathing lake.
