Italy Lake 1 - Excellent

Spiaggia Fronte Comune is a free public beach on the southeastern shore of Lake Maggiore near Brezzo di Bedero in Lombardy, Italy. The beach features a pebbly-gravelly surface approximately 10 metres wide. Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data from 2019-2022. The beach is situated a few kilometres from the town centre and from Ispra, in the Ticino River basin.

Location

Brezzo di Bedero municipality, Varese province, Lombardy region, on the southeastern shore of Lake Maggiore near Brebbia locality, a few kilometres from Ispra. Limited parking is available.

No services available. Limited parking. Dogs are not permitted. Small pier accessible from the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (reference period 2019-2022). Monitoring includes testing for pathogenic bacteria (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci) and cyanobacteria via the Pallanza buoy managed by CNR and ARPA. The wastewater treatment plant serving the area is located in Porto Val Travaglia and complies with discharge limits. The SIMILE project monitors and manages the lake with public participation.

Risks

Possible short-duration pollution events from unfavourable weather conditions, soil runoff, water accumulation, and unauthorised discharge of contaminated liquids or debris. Seasonal algal blooms are possible. Cyanobacteria are identified as potentially toxic species. No anomalous events have been recorded. No previous harmful effects to swimmers or the aquatic environment have been documented in the past three years.
