Storkower See is a 5 km long lake located approximately 20 km southeast of Berlin in the Saarow Hills. The lake has a surface area of 370 hectares and was formed by glacial meltwater during the last ice age. It is divided into two basins by a narrow section, with a maximum depth of 12 metres. The lake receives inflow from the Scharmützelsee via the Storkower Canal and discharges toward the Wolziger See. Water temperature ranges from 10.3 to 24.8°C, with average transparency of 1.8 metres.

Water

Natural lake with a surface area of 370.19 hectares, maximum depth of 12 metres, mean depth of 4.7 metres. The lake is stratified and has a water exchange time of 5.8 years. Geology of the surrounding area is sandy with a sandy shoreline. The catchment area is 167 km², comprising 51% forest, 27% arable land, 2% pasture, with the remainder as residential areas, sealed surfaces, and riparian buffer strips.

Location

Storkower, Wolfswinkel, located approximately 20 km southeast of Berlin in Brandenburg. The bathing area is located at coordinates 3429095 (east) and 5789817 (north), with a beach length of 30 metres.

Season

Monitoring is conducted through four-weekly sampling by the district health authority in accordance with Brandenburg bathing water regulations.

Water Quality

Water quality rated as excellent for all monitoring periods from 2016–2019 through 2021–2024. E. coli measurements (95th percentile) ranged from 24 to 69 per 100 ml; intestinal enterococci (95th percentile) ranged from 20 to 30 per 100 ml. No individual threshold exceedances were recorded. Ecological status classified as moderate (class 3) under the Water Framework Directive (2024). Water is fresh (< 0.5‰ salinity), with mean pH of 8.5 and mean transparency of 1.8 metres.

Risks

No cyanobacterial blooms were observed during the bathing season, and no future mass development of cyanobacteria is anticipated. Macroalgae and aquatic plants are present, with no anticipated future mass development of phytoplankton. Risk of ship tank discharge exists. No danger of bathing dermatitis caused by cercariae was identified.
