Finland Lake 1 - Excellent

Tahinlampi is a small lake bathing beach located approximately 2 kilometres from the centre of Pieksämäki, Finland, on the southern shore of Tahinlampi lake. The beach features sandy shores approximately 50 metres in length, with shallow reed vegetation and aquatic plants at the edges. The lake has a water area of only 15 hectares, with the rest of the shoreline actively used by fishermen. Water visibility is poor due to high turbidity, but microbiological water quality has been excellent.

Water

Tahinlampi is a lake with a water area of 15 hectares. The lake bottom slopes steeply, reaching a depth of 5.6 metres at the end of the dock. The bottom consists of sand to a depth of 1.5 metres, followed by muddy sediment. Visibility ranges from 1.4 to 1.5 metres at the shore. Water pH is 6.8–7.2. Annual precipitation in the area is 650 millimetres. The lake has connections to Pieni Tahinlampi and Kukkarojärvi.

Location

Tahinlampi bathing beach is located at Peiposjärventie 94, 76120 Pieksämäki, approximately 2 kilometres from Pieksämäki city centre. Coordinates: latitude 62.2898, longitude 27.2016. The beach is situated along Peiposjärventie road, which experiences minimal traffic.

Facilities

Two docks, a diving tower with three jumping heights, two lifebuoys, changing cabin, two outdoor toilets, waste bins, signage prohibiting pets, and an information safety instruction board.

Season

Monitoring occurs with four samples per season: one approximately two weeks before the swimming season begins and three during the swimming season at intervals not exceeding one month.

Water Quality

Water quality classification has been excellent in previous swimming seasons. Microbiological quality results show low levels of E. coli and enterococci across multiple years (2015–2020), consistently meeting excellent water quality standards (E. coli <1000 MPN/100ml; enterococci <400 CFU/100ml). Water is visually turbid and murky. No cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) have been detected.

Risks

Water has poor visibility due to high turbidity caused by surrounding peat bog increasing humic content and acidity. Long hot periods, calm weather, and stagnant water conditions increase the probability of cyanobacteria development as the swimming season progresses. Pine pollen from surrounding forest may accumulate on the water surface. Water circulation is slow, increasing saastumination risk.
