The Valbonnais bathing water is a freshwater lake located in the Isère department, created between 1970 and 1972. It covers 6 hectares with an average water depth of 2 metres and a maximum depth of 3 metres. The water is fed by two nearby sources with an average flow rate of 6000 cubic metres per day, resulting in complete water renewal approximately every 20 days. The bathing zone occupies the north-east section of the lake, with a 15-metre-wide sandy and herbaceous beach extending 50 metres into the water.

Water

Location

Located on the right bank of the Bonne river downstream from the centre of Valbonnais commune at an altitude of 710 metres. Access is available via the municipal parking or the Valbonheur camping area.

Facilities

Public toilets. Bar-restaurant with first aid equipment including defibrillator. Rescue boat available near the bar-restaurant. No lifeguard supervision. Beach prohibited to animals.

Season

Official bathing season begins early June and ends around 15 September, though most frequent use occurs from 14 July to 15 August.

Water Quality

Water is classified as good quality based on periodic analyses. Testing in 2019 showed pH levels between 7.6 and 7.9, Escherichia coli values below 15 NPP/100ml, and Enterococci levels below 30 NPP/100ml, all within regulatory limits. No significant pollution sources identified; risks are minimal to low.

Risks

Minimal risks identified. A horse breeding facility 600 metres to the north with fewer than 20 horses presents low pollution risk. New agricultural buildings 500 metres to the north respect current standards with negligible pollution risk. Protective dike prevents flooding from the Bonne river during high water. Monitoring sensor installed under Verneys bridge provides automatic alert to camping manager if water levels exceed threshold.
