Water Quality

Water quality is classified on a four-tier scale: excellent, good, sufficient, or poor. Monitoring focuses on microbiological quality using Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci as faecal pollution indicators. Long-term quality assessment is based on four consecutive bathing seasons using statistical analysis criteria. Bathing is not recommended if E. coli exceeds 1000 but does not exceed 3000 CFU/100 ml and/or intestinal enterococci exceed 300 but do not exceed 500 CFU/100 ml. Bathing is prohibited if E. coli exceeds 3000 CFU/100 ml and/or intestinal enterococci exceed 500 CFU/100 ml, or if excessive cyanobacterial growth is observed.

Risks

Cyanobacterial blooms (algal blooms) are a potential risk. Point source pollution from municipal wastewater and diffuse pollution from land use activities are identified as pollution sources.
