Velhartice rybník Bušek is a relatively small flow-through pond located in the Plzeň region of the Czech Republic at an elevation of 625 metres. The pond covers 1.1 hectares and is situated on a well-watered stream, with a water retention time of approximately 2–3 days at average depth of 2 metres. The water quality varies seasonally, with consistently low presence of toxicologically risky cyanobacteria. Water transparency between 2019–2023 ranged from 0.5–1.0 metres.

Water

Flow-through pond covering 1.1 hectares with average depth of 2 metres. Mean flow rate (Qa) is 0.096 m³/s with specific runoff (q) of 13.7 l/s·km². Water retention time is approximately 2–3 days. The pond sits within a catchment area of 7.01 km².

Location

The bathing area is located in Velhartice, in the cadastral area of Milínov near Hlavňovice. The beach is 130 metres long with grassy and partially sandy shore. Visitor numbers are below 100 annually. No official operator is designated.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as 'Excellent' according to Czech bathing water regulations. Microbial contamination occurred occasionally in past summer periods but was not recorded between 2019–2023. Phosphorus concentration is not monitored at the main monitoring point since 2012; measurements from 2010–2011 showed very high values of 0.35 and 0.17 mg/l. Cyanobacteria concentration exceeded 50 µg/l chlorophyll-a only twice during 2019–2023, marginally.

Risks

High risk of microbial contamination from diffuse sources, particularly during rainfall-runoff events and high flow periods. High risk of phosphorus input from diffuse sources. A point source of pollution (wastewater outfalls of Hlavňovice, ID 119073) poses high risk for microbial contamination and extreme risk for phosphorus input. Short-term microbial contamination occurs during periods of elevated water flow.
