Werbellinsee is a large, deep glacial lake located approximately 50 km north of Berlin in the Schorfheide-Chorin UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, part of the Mecklenburg Lake Plateau. With a maximum depth of 55 m and surface area of 795 hectares, it ranks among Brandenburg's largest and deepest lakes. The bathing site at Holzablage Michen is a popular recreational area with excellent water clarity, averaging 3.2 m transparency, and is used for swimming, water sports, fishing, and diving.

Water

Natural lake covering 795.35 hectares. Maximum depth 55 m, mean depth 19.6 m. Water temperature range 8.3–25.2 °C (mean 19 °C). pH 8.2–8.8 (mean 8.5). Water transparency 1.5–5 m (mean 3.2 m). Freshwater lake with salinity less than 0.5‰. Stratified water column with water exchange time exceeding 30 years. Water level fluctuations of 0.5 m.

Season

Monitored year-round; examinations conducted every four weeks by the district health authority.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent for all monitoring periods 2016–2024. Microbiological parameters within acceptable limits: E. coli 95th percentile 15–24 per 100 ml, intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 17–20 per 100 ml. No single-value exceedances recorded. Ecological status class 4 (unsatisfactory) under Water Framework Directive. Naturally oligotrophic, currently mesotrophic. No cyanobacterial blooms observed in the past 4 years.

Risks

Medium risk of phytoplankton mass development. No observed cyanobacterial water blooms. No danger of cercarial dermatitis. Short-term pollution and other contamination are not expected.
