Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Wurlsee is a natural lake in northern Brandenburg belonging to the Lychen Waters. The broad basin covers 95 hectares with a maximum depth of 28.3 metres and is divided into two sub-basins by a peninsula. The lake is mostly groundwater-fed with three small tributaries. It is one of the clearest lakes in Brandenburg with summer water transparency of 2 to 4 metres.

Water

Natural lake with surface area of 95.016 hectares. Maximum depth 28.3 metres, mean depth 12.3 metres. Catchment area of 9.1 square kilometres. Water exchange time of 10.2 years. Sandy and moorland geology with natural to near-natural shoreline. Stratified lake with water temperature ranging from 9 to 24 degrees Celsius (2021–2024), pH 7.23–8.43, transparency 2–4 metres.

Location

Located in northern Brandenburg in the Neustrelitz Small Lake District of the Mecklenburg Lake District. The bathing area Zeltplatz 79 is situated on the eastern shore near the town of Lychen. Camping facilities and boat rental are available.

Water Quality

Bathing water classified as excellent for all four-year assessment periods from 2016–2019 through 2021–2024. Escherichia coli 95-percentile values ranged from 53 to 352 per 100 ml. Intestinal enterococci 95-percentile values ranged from 23 to 78 per 100 ml. No individual value exceedances of microbiological parameters recorded. Ecological status class moderate (2024). Oligotrophic natural nutrient content, eutrophic measured nutrient content.

Risks

Macroalgae and aquatic plants present. No cyanobacterial blooms observed during bathing season. No danger of future mass development of cyanobacteria. No danger of cercarial dermatitis. Short-term microbiological pollution and other pollution not expected.
