Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Grosser Zermittensee is a natural lake of 14 hectares located in the Rheinsberg Lake District on the southern edge of the Mecklenburg Lake District in northeast Germany. It is situated in a depression with steeply rising shores, surrounded by forest, with a maximum depth of 8 metres. The lake has an almost rectangular water surface and is a nutrient-rich water body where hydrogen sulphide forms in the deep water during summer. The bathing site at the north shore is equipped with changing facilities, a volleyball field, and a 50-metre cable car.

Water

Natural lake with a surface area of 14 hectares, maximum depth of 8 metres, located in a depression with steeply rising shores. The water surface is almost rectangular. Water transparency during the bathing season ranged between 1.8 and 3 metres, with an average of 2 metres.

Location

Kagar bathing site on the northern shore of Grosser Zermittensee near Rheinsberg, Ostprignitz-Ruppin district, Brandenburg, Germany. Beach length: 100 metres.

Facilities

Changing cabins, volleyball field, 50-metre cable car, jetty, benches, sandpit.

Season

Monitoring conducted through four-weekly sampling by the district health authority.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent for all assessment periods 2016–2019 through 2021–2024. Microbiological parameters show E. coli and intestinal enterococci at 15 per 100 ml (95-percentile and 90-percentile values for 2021–2024). No individual limit exceedances for E. coli or intestinal enterococci were recorded. No cyanobacterial blooms were observed during the bathing season.

Risks

No cyanobacterial blooms observed. Medium risk of future phytoplankton mass development. Macroalgae and aquatic plants present. Hydrogen sulphide forms in the deep water during summer. No short-term pollution or other pollution expected.
