Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2017-2020). No sewage treatment plant discharges or wastewater discharges reach the sea. No short-term pollution events were recorded in the past four years. No anomalous situations were documented.

Risks

Dinoflagellate microalgae blooms of Ostreopsis ovata occur seasonally from July to September. These blooms have caused mortality and distress in marine organisms including starfish, sea urchins, crabs, and cephalopods. Bathers have experienced transitory discomfort including rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, fever, dermatitis, and conjunctivitis during high concentrations of Ostreopsis ovata, particularly following storms when marine aerosol formation disperses toxins into the air.
