Risks

Dinoflagellate microalga Ostreopsis ovata proliferation occurs seasonally from July to September. This has caused die-off and stress in marine organisms including starfish, sea urchins, crabs, and cephalopod molluscs. Bathers have experienced transient symptoms including rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, fever, dermatitis, and conjunctivitis coinciding with high Ostreopsis ovata concentrations, particularly after rough seas that promote marine aerosol formation and toxin dispersal.
