Bathing water area located 350 metres north of the Alento River near Francavilla al Mare in the Abruzzo region. The beach is sandy with over 98% sand composition and medium granulometry. The surrounding area contains numerous urban settlements and tourism-related structures. The bathing area extends 1.4 kilometres along the coast.

Water

Coastal waters of the Alento River basin. Beach width is 40 metres. Bathing area extends 1.4 kilometres. Sand composition exceeds 98% with medium grain size (D50 = 0.295 mm). No sand dunes are present.

Location

Francavilla al Mare, Chieti Province, Abruzzo region. The bathing water is situated 350 metres north of the Alento River mouth. Tourist information office located at Piazza Sirena, CAP 66023, telephone 085-817169.

Facilities

Beach establishments, first aid and assistance services, disabled access facilities, restrooms, recreational areas, food service points, sports facilities, seaside promenade, cycling paths.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is ECCELLENTE (Excellent). Identified pollution sources include river mouths and wastewater treatment systems. Two operational treatment plants serve the area: Francavilla-Foro (150 kW capacity, 96% sewer coverage) and Francavilla-Pretaro (135 kW capacity, 96% sewer coverage), both discharging via submarine outfalls to 2000 metres from shore. A third treatment plant is under construction on the Alento River. No anomalous events have occurred. No cyanobacterial blooms have been detected in waters off the Abruzzo coast.

Risks

River mouths identified as potential pollution sources. Short-duration pollution events are under study using modelling approaches. Sparse algal blooms occur in summer; historical records show some dinoflagellate blooms with low or absent toxic species presence.
