Coastal bathing water located on a non-urban beach with intensive use within the Natura 2000 site Ria Formosa/Castro Marim. The beach features wide golden sand with ample dunes and typical vegetation. Jellyfish are likely to occur in the water. The beach extends for 1200 metres.

Coastal water body with tidal range of 3.4 metres and mean wave height of 0.5 metres. Predominant wind direction is E/SE. Beach length is 1200 metres.

Location

Castro Marim municipality. Monitoring point coordinates: Latitude 37.1691°, Longitude -7.4976° (ETRS 89).

Season

June 1st to September 30th, 2025. Monthly sampling frequency.

Water Quality

Water quality classification 2024 complies with Decreto-Lei 135/09 of June 3rd. Short-term pollution is scarce but microbiological contamination may occur due to sporadic malfunction of sanitation infrastructures, rainwater collection systems, or heavy rainfall events causing surface run-off and overflows. No days of bathing restrictions due to short-term pollution events occurred during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Jellyfish are likely to occur. Potential microbiological pollution from sanitation and rainwater drainage infrastructure. Macroalgae proliferation is frequent; cyanobacteria and phytoplankton proliferation are unlikely.
