Tapada Grande Dam is located within the Natural Park of the Guadiana Valley in the sub-basin of the river Chança. The sub-basin has a drainage area of 33 km² with Cabeça de Aires as the main temporary water course. The surrounding land is characterized by the urban landscape of São Domingos mines, forest areas, and agricultural land. The site experiences infrequent rainfall, with September being the wettest month during the bathing season.
