Amoreira-Rio is a transition bathing water located at the mouth of the Aljezur river in the Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina Natural Park and Natura 2000 site. The beach features golden sand with dunes and extends 200 metres along the shore. Strong currents may occur at the river mouth. Tidal range is 3.4 to 3.5 metres with mean wave height of 0.5 metres and predominant wind direction from the north to northwest.

Aljezur municipality in the Algarve region of Portugal. Monitoring point coordinates: latitude 37.3439°, longitude -8.8402° (ETRS 89).

1 June to 30 September 2025.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2024 complies with Decreto-Lei 135/09. Monitored monthly during bathing season. Short-term pollution events (less than 72 hours) are unlikely except for possible microbiological contamination during heavy rainfall causing surface run-off. Bathing was advised against or prohibited on 2 days during the 2024 bathing season due to short-term pollution events.

Risks

Strong currents at the river mouth. Microbiological contamination may occur during heavy rainfall events. One fish-farming unit operates nearby. Cyanobacteria proliferation is unlikely, macroalgae are uncommon, and phytoplankton proliferation is unlikely.
