Amorosa is an urban beach in Viana do Castelo featuring a narrow sand strip bordered by a dune system experiencing severe erosion. A pier exists in the southern part of the beach, built following the 1978–1979 storms. The beach encompasses the Chafé and Chafé Sul Concessions.

Water Quality

Water quality classification follows Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Sampling frequency is fortnightly. In the 2024 bathing season, bathing was advised against or prohibited for 4 days due to short-term pollution events. Potential pollution sources include faecal contamination from tributaries, sewerage and industrial drainage infrastructure, and the fishing harbour.

Risks

Short-term pollution (duration ≤72 hours) is unlikely but may occur due to excessive tributary flow during rainfall events, wastewater pumping station failure, contamination of rainwater and industrial drainage networks, or vessel contamination. Cyanobacteria proliferation potential is moderate with a history of blooms. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation potential are both low with no history of occurrence.
