Castelo de Neiva is a rural beach with a narrow sand strip and a dune system displaying signs of intense erosion. The beach features piers perpendicular to the shoreline, constructed following intervention after the 1978/1979 storms. It is also known as Pedra Alta.

Located in Viana do Castelo municipality. Monitoring point coordinates: Latitude 41.625121°, Longitude -8.817569°.

Season

14 June to 14 September 2025.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Sampling frequency is every 3 weeks. No days of bathing restriction due to short-term pollution occurred during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive flow of tributaries during rainfall, wastewater pumping station failures, or contamination of the rainwater drainage network. Faecal contamination may originate from the Neiva River, creeks discharging near the beach, and local sewerage and rainwater drainage networks. Cyanobacteria proliferation potential is moderate with a history of bloom occurrence. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation potential is low with no history of occurrence.
