This bathing water profile covers three beaches in the Loire-Atlantique region: Plage Benoît in La Baule and Plages Le Nau and Anse de Toullain in Le Pouliguen. The profile is classified as Type 2, indicating that contamination risks are confirmed and causes are known. The beaches are monitored during the summer bathing season from July to August, with peak daily attendance reaching 70,000–80,000 people across the entire La Baule–Le Pouliguen bay. Water quality classification under the 2006/7/CE Directive shows excellent to good conditions across the three sites, though occasional bacterial contamination episodes have been recorded.

Water

Coastal bathing areas in the Bay of La Baule–Le Pouliguen. Water depth ranges from approximately 40 metres at high tide to 75 metres at high tide near Le Nau. The area is subject to ocean and meteorological influences characteristic of Atlantic coastal waters.

Location

La Baule and Le Pouliguen are located in Loire-Atlantique, Pays de la Loire region. Plage Benoît is in La Baule. Plages Le Nau and Anse de Toullain are in Le Pouliguen. Each beach is approximately 350–1500 metres from the Etier du Pouliguen.

Facilities

Lifeguard surveillance during defined hours (Benoît: 12h30–19h00; Le Nau: 11h00–12h30 and 11h00–19h00). Beach monitoring and information systems in place.

Season

Bathing period: 15 June to 15 September. Surveillance period: 1 July to 31 August.

Water Quality

Plage Benoît: Water quality classified as good to excellent (2007–2010). Under Directive 2006/7/CE, excellent quality was recorded in 2009. Plage Le Nau: Consistently excellent water quality (2007–2010). Plage Anse de Toullain: Good to excellent water quality. Bacterial contamination episodes occurred on specific dates in 2009 and 2010, primarily attributed to rainfall events. Main pollution sources identified include the Etier du Pouliguen estuary (medium to high impact), domestic animals, and wastewater treatment plant overflows.

Risks

Bacterial contamination linked to rainfall and Etier du Pouliguen estuary discharges. Occasional presence of domestic and wild animals on beaches. Potential wastewater treatment plant surcharge events during heavy precipitation.
