Coastal bathing areas in the Bay of La Baule–Le Pouliguen, connected to the Etier du Pouliguen estuary. Tidal depth at Plage Benoît and Le Nau ranges approximately 75 meters at high tide.

Location

Plage Benoît is located in La Baule, Loire-Atlantique. Plage Le Nau and Anse de Toullain are located in Le Pouliguen, Loire-Atlantique, in the Pays de la Loire region of France.

Facilities

Lifeguard surveillance from 12:30 to 19:00 at Plage Benoît and from 11:00 to 12:30 then 11:00 to 19:00 at Le Nau. Water quality monitoring conducted daily during the surveillance period.

Season

Official period of opening is 15 June to 15 September. Monitoring period is 1 July to 31 August.

Water Quality

Plage Benoît: classified as Good quality (2004–2010 period under Directive 2006/7/CE). Historical classification under Directive 76/160/CEE shows B (2007), A (2008–2010). Pollution episodes recorded on 8 September 2010, 23 August 2010, and 21 August 2009, attributed to rainfall and unidentified sources. Plage Le Nau: classified as Excellent quality (2007–2010 under Directive 2006/7/CE). Historical classification A or 10A (2007–2010). Anse de Toullain: classified as Excellent quality. The Etier du Pouliguen estuary presents a medium to strong impact on water quality at all three sites.

Risks

Etier du Pouliguen estuary presents medium to strong pollution impact at all three sites. Identified pollution sources include sanitary overflow posts, wastewater treatment systems, domestic and wild animals in proximity to beaches, and stormwater runoff. Bacterial contamination episodes have been recorded.
