Río Villahermosa bathing area is located in Argelita, Castellón, Spain, at an altitude of 280 metres. The bathing zone comprises two designated areas along the river, featuring small pebbles, stones, gravel and aquatic vegetation. The riverbed substrate consists of carbonated materials such as limestone, dolomites and marges typical of low Mediterranean mountain rivers. The right bank has been modified to create a beach and riverside promenade area.

Water

River Villahermosa (Río Villahermosa), classified as a mineralized low mountain Mediterranean river. Natural water body with a surface area of 440 square kilometres and perimeter of 154 kilometres in the Júcar River Basin. Maximum altitude 1,900 metres, minimum altitude 285 metres in the influence zone. Riverbed consists of small pebbles, stones, gravel and silt with some aquatic vegetation. A concrete slab exists at the start of bathing zone 2 near the ford, and an artificial barrier of rocks creates a backwater effect upstream.

Location

Argelita, Castellón, Comunidad Valenciana, Spain. Access from Valencia via the A-7 motorway towards Castellón, exiting towards Onda (CV-20), then continuing towards Fanzara and Vallat. From Vallat, direction to Argelita. After passing Argelita village, turn right at the Lucena del Cid junction. Approximately 600 metres past the junction, an asphalted path on the right returns to Argelita village, leading to a ford where the sampling point is located. Parking available.

Water quality classification available according to Real Decreto 1341/2007 criteria. Urban wastewater discharges in the influence area (5.7 km from bathing zone, 66 m³/day, 935 equivalent inhabitants) classified as non-significant pressure. Self-contamination from bathing water users classified as significant short-duration contamination risk. Water body classified as altered by human action.

Risks

Short-duration contamination risks identified: runoff from livestock farming and cultivated areas during heavy rainfall; self-contamination from high numbers of bathers on weekends; accidental or illegal discharges near bathing zone; dead animals; sediment and sludge mobilization during heavy rainfall or high bather numbers; organic waste from strong rainfall or high bather numbers; system failures or sewerage network breaks during abnormally reduced river flow. Upstream water retention caused by artificial rock barrier affects flow.
