The Piscina fluvial del Río Ayódar is a natural river bathing area located in Fuentes de Ayódar, Castellón, in the Valencian Community of Spain. The bathing zone is situated approximately 2 kilometres from the village, midway between Fuentes de Ayódar and Torralba del Pinar. The area features a riverbed composed of conglomerate rock formations, with cascades at the upper end and deeper pools at the lower end. The surrounding landscape includes Mediterranean forest vegetation with pine trees, scrubland, and cultivated olive fields.

Water

The Río Pequeño (Small River) is a mineralized river of low Mediterranean mountain classification. The water body is part of the Júcar River Basin hydrographic division. The proposed minimum ordinary flow is 1.80 m³/s, with a four-year return period flow of 13.78 m³/s. The riverbed consists of rodeno-type rock, with large stone slabs at the upper zone and stones, gravel, and aquatic vegetation at the lower zone.

Location

Fuentes de Ayódar, Castellón, Spain. Access from Valencia via the A-7 motorway towards Castellón, exiting towards Onda (CV-20), continuing on CV 201 towards Ayódar, then taking CV 205 to Fuentes de Ayódar. The bathing area is located approximately 2 kilometres beyond the town, between Fuentes de Ayódar and Torralba del Pinar. Parking is available.

Parking available. Informational signage. Picnic areas. Trash bins and containers. Daily garbage collection. No lifeguard station. No public toilets or showers. No adapted water access. No bar or restaurant. Estimated bathers: 50 on weekends, 25 on weekdays.

Water Quality

Water quality classification data are available through the Spanish health ministry portal (http://nayadeciudadano.sanidad.gob.es/). The bathing area is identified as a natural water mass. Potential contamination sources include autocontamination from bathers, agricultural runoff from surrounding extensive livestock and cultivated areas, and occasional accidental or illegal discharges. Urban wastewater from the area is minimal, with only 71 inhabitants at the nearest settlement (Torralba del Pinar) located 3 kilometres away.

Risks

Short-duration contamination risks are identified, including: runoff from nearby livestock farms and fertilized agricultural areas during heavy rainfall; elevated bather numbers on weekends causing autocontamination and sediment resuspension; accidental or illegal discharges near the bathing area; dead animals; sediment and mud mobilization during heavy rainfall; organic waste from high bather numbers; and reduced river flow during dry periods, which can concentrate pollutants.
