Badesee Effeld is an artificial lake located in the Heinsberg district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The bathing water has maintained an excellent quality classification for four consecutive years (2020–2023). The lake covers 32 hectares with sandy substrate and natural water circulation through groundwater. Water transparency averages 4.0 metres, and the water body is unshratified with a mean depth of 15 metres and maximum depth of 20 metres.

Water

Artificial lake covering 32 hectares. Mean water depth: 15 metres; maximum depth: 20 metres. Water temperature range: 14.0–24.3°C (mean 19.6°C). pH range: 7.15–8.00 (mean 7.57). Conductivity range: 432–494 µS/cm (mean 456 µS/cm). Water transparency: 4.0–5.0 metres. Substrate is sandy. The lake has groundwater circulation with a water exchange time exceeding 30 days. Natural nutrient content is mesotrophic.

Location

Wassenberg, Bruchstraße 30, 41849. The bathing area is located in the lowlands (below 200 metres elevation) with a beach section measuring 75 metres in length. The sampling point is at UTM coordinates E: 296632, N: 5668400.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. No relevant pollution sources have been identified. No microbiological or chemical contamination in sediments detected.

Risks

Cercariae (duck flea causing swimmer's itch) have occasionally been reported with isolated complaints, though no impact on water quality has been documented. Occasional passage of migratory birds and sporadic ducks and geese observed with no relevant impact. Potential short-term contamination is conceivable from rainfall events and runoff from arable land; preventive measures have been implemented through the construction of appropriate drainage channels. No mass development of cyanobacteria has been observed in the past four years, and no future risk is anticipated. The risk of future mass development of phytoplankton is low.
