Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Badesee Gernsheim is a former gravel extraction lake with a water surface area of 3.8 hectares located approximately 25 km southwest of Darmstadt in the Rhine lowlands. The lake reaches a maximum depth of 10.7 meters with a mean depth of 5.0 meters. The bathing area is situated on the southern shore with a 120-meter-long and 25-meter-wide sandy beach that is relatively shallow, making it suitable for children. The surrounding shoreline features reed beds and dense vegetation, while the bathing zone is free of aquatic plants.

Water

Former gravel extraction lake (Baggersee). Water surface area: 3.8 hectares. Maximum depth: 10.68 meters. Mean depth: 5.03 meters. Located in the Upper Rhine Plain with sandy substrate. The lake exhibits stable thermal stratification during summer months.

Location

Gernsheim, Hesse, Germany. Accessed from Gernsheim via the old B44 (Wormser Straße), Pfälzer Straße, and a connecting road, approximately a few hundred meters from the town center. Residential development is located 100–200 meters away.

Facilities

Toilets, showers, changing cabins, kiosk. Average daily visitor count: 80–100 bathers.

Season

16 May 2026 to 26 September 2026. Pre-season testing conducted before the season begins; monthly monitoring during the season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2021–2025). Monitoring shows Enterococcus and Escherichia coli levels consistently below or at detection limits. Nutrient loading and risk of cyanobacteria blooms classified as moderate. Observed cyanobacteria mass occurrences during bathing season classified as low. No known pollution sources from wastewater, stormwater, or surface runoff. The lake has an aeration system installed to improve water quality.

Risks

Moderate risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is possible even with relatively low nutrient loading. Thermal stratification can develop during summer months.
