Badesee Klein-Krotzenburg is a 6.1-hectare former sand and gravel extraction lake located in the Mainaue floodplain. It is situated 25 km east of Frankfurt and 10 km southeast of Hanau, less than 50 m from residential buildings. The lake has a maximum depth of 5.9 m and an average depth of 3.3 m. The shallow depth prevents stable temperature stratification in summer, causing the entire water body to warm significantly and potentially releasing nutrients from the sediment. The lake is used for bathing, fishing, and recreational diving.

Water

Baggersee (gravel pit lake) with a surface area of 6.1 hectares, maximum depth of 5.92 m, and average depth of 3.26 m. The lake formed through sand and gravel extraction. The southern shore is shallow with a sandy beach measuring 192 m in length and 19 m average width.

Location

Located in Hainburg, 25 km east of Frankfurt and 10 km southeast of Hanau. Situated southeast of Klein-Krotzenburg along the L3065 road towards Seligenstadt. Access is from the southeastern corner of the lake via the L3065, Ostring, and Stadtweg. Average daily visitor count is approximately 170 bathers.

Facilities

Toilets, showers, kiosk, separating pier for swimmers and non-swimmers, beach volleyball court, two table tennis tables, two children's swings, partially tree-shaded rest area.

Season

Official monitoring and swimming season: 10 May 2026 to 13 September 2026. Pre-season testing occurs before the season begins.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent water quality in 2021–2025. Water is monitored before the season begins with testing for two indicator bacteria (Enterococci and Escherichia coli), and monthly testing during the season. Cyanobacteria monitoring is conducted three times per season by the operator. During summer 2023, elevated cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) development occurred due to moderate nutrient loading. Risk of future cyanobacteria blooms is assessed as low. No potential hygienically hazardous wastewater, stormwater, or surface runoff discharges are known.

Risks

Elevated cyanobacteria development observed during summer 2023. Cyanobacteria can produce substances that may adversely affect bathers' health, such as skin irritation. Low risk of future cyanobacteria blooms. The shallow depth allows rapid summer warming and potential nutrient release from sediment.
