Badesee Mainflingen

Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Badesee Mainflingen is a 7.5-hectare quarry lake located in the Mainflingen lake district, 32 km east of Frankfurt and 20 km southeast of Hanau. The lake has a maximum depth of 6.0 meters and average depth of 2.3 meters. In summer, dense submerged aquatic plants develop throughout the lake, which suppress algal growth and produce clear water. The bathing area is located on the northern shore with a 335-meter beach consisting of a 78-meter sand section and adjacent lawn area.

Water

Quarry lake (Baggersee) with surface area of 7.5 hectares, maximum depth of 6.0 meters, and mean depth of 2.3 meters. Located in the Mainflingen lake district on former gravel extraction sites in the Main floodplain.

Location

Southern part of Mainflingen, immediately adjacent to Zellhäuser Straße. Access via Zellhäuser Straße to the street Am Sportplatz and Seestraße to the eastern side of the lake. Parking available at the integrated campground.

Facilities

Toilets, showers, changing rooms, kiosks, beach volleyball field, table tennis, large outdoor chess set, two water trampolines. Integrated campground with 320 fixed pitches and 30 seasonal pitches. Bathing jetty separates non-swimmer and swimmer areas.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent quality (Ausgezeichnete Qualität). Monitoring shows consistently low indicator bacteria levels (enterococci and Escherichia coli) across 2021-2025. Nutrient loading is low to moderate. No known pollution sources from wastewater, stormwater, or direct runoff. Cyanobacteria risk is low, although brief mass developments cannot be excluded.

Risks

Dense submerged aquatic plants in open water during summer. However, these do not pose danger to swimmers provided they remain calm; they are not constricting plants. Cyanobacteria bloom possible despite low nutrient status.
