Koenigsee Zellhausen

Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Königsee Zellhausen is a former gravel pit in the Main floodplain located 30 km east of Frankfurt and 18 km southeast of Hanau. The lake has a water surface area of 14.6 hectares and is surrounded by forest and meadows. The bathing area features a sandy beach with a shallow, gently sloping shore and is located in the southeastern part of the lake.

Water

Former gravel pit lake with water surface area of 14.6 hectares, maximum depth of 14.5 metres, and mean depth of 6.5 metres. The lake can develop stable thermal stratification during summer months. An aeration system operated until 2013 and is no longer in service.

Location

Located north of Zellhausen directly on the L3065 road, 30 km east of Frankfurt and 18 km southeast of Hanau. Access via the road Am See from L3065. The bathing area includes parking and facilities.

Facilities

Toilets, showers, changing rooms, kiosk, sandy beach, beach volleyball field, table tennis table, children's playground with swings and seesaw, lifeguard services available.

Season

Official bathing season from 09 May 2026 to 13 September 2026.

Water Quality

Rated as excellent quality for 2025. Water quality is monitored before the bathing season and at least monthly during the season. Testing focuses on indicator bacteria (enterococci and Escherichia coli). 2025 monitoring shows enterococci and E. coli consistently below 10 KBE/100ml. Nutrient loading and cyanobacteria development risk are relatively low. No known pollution sources from wastewater, combined sewer, or stormwater discharges. No observed cyanobacteria blooms during bathing seasons.

Risks

Brief mass proliferation of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) cannot be excluded despite low nutrient loading. Health authority may recommend specific behaviours or temporarily advise against bathing if cyanobacteria bloom occurs.
