Water

Freshwater lake. The lake receives water from groundwater aquifers (chalk and alluvial layers) and surface flow from the Durdent river. Deep water oxygenation levels have been monitored.

Location

Lake Caniel is located in the Côte d'Albâtre area. The study area is situated along the Durdent river system in the Normandy region of France.

Water Quality

Water quality assessments conducted from 2000 to 2011 show bacteriological monitoring results. Cyanobacterial proliferation was documented in seasons 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Nitrate and phosphorus concentrations have been measured. Potential pollution sources identified include collective sanitation systems, non-collective sanitation, agricultural inputs, bird populations, and fishing bait additives.

Risks

Cyanobacterial blooms documented in multiple seasons (2008–2011). Cercarial dermatitis (swimmer's itch) has been identified as an epidemiological concern. Potential bacteriological pollution from sanitation system failures. Nutrient loading from agricultural and sanitation sources promotes eutrophication.
